MANOLO FORTICH — Members of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) visited the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Manolo Fortich on Monday, February 9, for a benchmarking activity focused on the municipality’s best practices in nutrition.
Mayor Rogelio N. Quiño warmly welcomed the delegation, led by NNC Officer-in-Charge Executive Director IV Atty. Rosalina U. Bascao, during a brief meeting held at the New Government Center (NGC) Conference Room.
Health and Nutrition Among Top Priorities of the Administration
In his message, Mayor Quiño underscored the importance of ensuring equitable access to health and nutrition services for all Manoleños, emphasizing that nutrition remains a core priority under the eight-point agenda of his administration.
He noted that the municipality has made significant progress in reducing malnutrition over the past two decades, from a recorded rate of 29 percent in 2007 to a remarkable 0.9 percent at present.
“Manolo Fortich received the highest award for nutrition efforts in 2021. We are also very proud that, among Municipal Nutrition Action Officers nationwide, ours was recognized as the 2023 National Outstanding MNAO,” Mayor Quiño said.
“These awards are testaments to our sustained implementation of nutrition programs aimed at promoting healthy diets, improving nutrition practices, expanding access to nutrition services, and achieving better health outcomes,” he added.
Following the meeting, NNC members conducted an on-site inspection of the Human Milk Hub, the NGC Breastfeeding Room, the Complementary Food Processing Facility, and the Mobile Kitchen.
Benchmark for Local Nutrition Initiatives
The NNC is currently in Northern Mindanao for its week-long First Quarter Management Conference, with Manolo Fortich selected as the benchmarking site for its exemplary nutrition initiatives.
Insights gathered from the activity will serve as references for future studies and policy reviews and may guide the replication of Manolo Fortich’s nutrition programs in other regions across the country.
Manolo Fortich is the only LGU in Region 10 with a community-based Human Milk Hub, an establishment where breast milk is collected, stored, and distributed to infants in critical need, including ill newborns whose mothers are unable to produce sufficient milk after childbirth.
In addition, the municipality operates its own Complementary Food Processing Facility, enabling the local government to produce nutritious food products such as Nutribun, which are distributed through the Real Quality Public Service (RQPS) Program and supplementary feeding initiatives.
The Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) is also studying the feasibility of producing additional supplementary food items, including nutri-cookies, rice-monggo blends, and rice-monggo curls, intended for children aged six to ten months.
