Agusan Canyon goes cashless with PalengQR Ph launch

PalengQR Ph Plus heads to Agusan Canyon, marking its third leg launch in the municipality of Manolo Fortich.

AGUSAN CANYON – The local government of Manolo Fortich officially launched the PalengQR Ph Plus program at the Agusan Canyon Public Market on March 4, 2026, encouraging consumers, vendors, and motorists to adopt digital payment systems for safer and more convenient transactions.

In his message, Vice Mayor Reynaldo L. Bagayas Jr. urged the public to embrace cashless payment options citing their role in reducing red tape, and preventing corruption, noting that these are challenges often associated with cash-based transactions.

He stressed that as technology continues to advance, the local businesses in the Philippines, including those in Manolo Fortich, will inevitably transition to cashless systems, noting that many countries are now heavily reliant on mobile phone-based payments.

Gusto nato nga ingani na pud nga cashless ang atong transaction sa merkado, cashless ang atong bayad sa atong mga transport group—sa atong mga toda, dulog, sa multicab, sa jeep ug sa van,” he said.

Led by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), PalengQR Ph aims to expand QR-based digital payments in public markets and local transport. Through this initiative, consumers can complete transactions securely while minimizing risks such as counterfeit money and improving record-keeping for businesses.

Going digital in business

Agusan Canyon is the third barangay in Manolo Fortich to adopt the program following Barangay Damilag and Barangay Tankulan, which held their respective launches held last year. The local government partnered with several financial service providers, including the Landbank of the Philippines, Maya, Gcash, PalawanPay, BPI Banko, and the 1st Valley Bank. These partners assisted vendors and transport operators in opening accounts and generating QR codes to enable real-time digital payments.

For market vendors like Melissa Ravidas, 46, president of the Agusan Canyon Market Vendors Association, the initiative presents an opportunity to modernize small business operations.

This is our time nga mu-grab ta ani, isubmit nato ang atong kaugalingon para musabay ta aning kabag-ohan sa atong komunidad,” she said.

Modernizing Manolo Fortich

Manolo Fortich is the first municipality in the island of Mindanao to implement the PalengQR Ph in public markets, beginning in 2025. The initiative earned the municipality recognition during the 5th GCash Digital Excellence Awards, an annual program honoring government partners that champion digital-first and citizen-focused solutions.
