In commemoration of the late Fr. Nerylito Satur, who was killed in 1991 for implementing logging moratorium as deputy Forest Officer, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) conducted a re-planting and monitoring of the reforested area at Barangay San Miguel, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon on October 14, 2022.
MENRO along with the representatives from the different offices went to the area to check the previously planted seedlings, replace the dead seedlings and weed the area of the surviving ones. In this way, the surviving rate of the trees would be guaranteed.
The commemoration of the death of Fr. Satur is in accordance to the Provincial Ordinance No. 2004-06R (9th SP) declaring October 14 of every year as Fr. Nerylito Satur day in remembrance of his self-less dedication for the protection and conservation of Bukidron environment. In the observance of Fr. Neri Satur Day, LGUs are mandated to either conduct tree planting activities in the areas properly designated by the local government units concerned or conduct religious rites or ceremonies in commemoration of the death of Fr. Neri Satur.
On October 14, 1991, Fr. Satur was ambushed on his way back from the fiesta mass in the hinterland of his Parish in Barangay Guinoyoran, Valencia City. Per records of the DENR in Bukidnon during that period, Fr. Neri Satur alone was credited for the interception and confiscation of 6,602.93 board feet or 15.57 m³ of illegal flitches and lumber from February 1991 to August 1991, and the confiscation of one unit conveyance weapon-carrier in Valencia, Bukidnon. His commitment and sincere effort gained him the wrath and ire of armed lumber smugglers in Valencia City.
