SUSTAINING SANITATION IN MANOLO FORTICH AS 6 BARANGAYS HAILED AS ZOD FREE

Highlighting SDG 6 "Clean Water and Sanitation"

In an attempt to foster a sanitized and hygienic environment, six barangays of Manolo Fortich, namely Ticala, Sto. Niño, Dicklum, Mambatangan, Dahilayan, and Dalirig, have attained the Zero Open Defecation (ZOD) Free Barangay Award, recognized by the Provincial Health Office of Bukidnon.

The awarding ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the Kaamulan Folk Art Theater, Malaybalay City. Barangays from the neighboring municipalities and cities of Quezon, Lantapan, Dangcagan, Maramag, Sumilao, Malaybalay City, Valencia City, Kitaotao, Kalilangan, Don Carlos, Kadingilan, Impasugong, and San Fernando were also honored as awardees.

The evaluation of the selected barangay awardees was conducted by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Bukidnon in line with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which is "Clean Water and Sanitation." With this, the PHO aims to achieve zero open defecation in barangays of each municipality, which can be evidenced through the accessible utilization of sanitation facilities like public and private comfort rooms.

As the award serves as a significant achievement for Manolo Fortich, Municipal Health Office (MHO) Sanitary Inspector Bryan C. Degamo expounds on the importance of maintaining a zero defecation environment for hygiene and health: “Tagaan gyud dapat og importansya ang CR kay dako kaayo siya og impact sa atong health, dili lang ni sa atong gender sensitivity noh pero apil napud sa atong health kay tungod diha pud makuha ang mga sakit-sakit sa Diarrhea, Gastro or stomach-related na mga sakit, or Amoeba.”

Board Members of the 27th Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Bukidnon led the awarding ceremony, which was attended by barangay awardees from participating municipalities in the province. Barangay officials, headed by the barangay captains of Manolo Fortich and the rest of the barangay awardees, received recognition in the form of furnished and customized frames with their respective barangay names printed.

Manolo Fortich Barangay Dicklum Chairman Hon. Reynaldo Mutiangpili, whose barangay is among the awardees, expressed his pride through an interview: “We are very happy that we are able to attain a Zero Open Defecation Award for our Barangay. Let us continue our efforts to attain our vision of a disciplined, developed, and progressive Barangay Dicklum.”

Moreover, Board Member and Committee Chairperson on Health Ranulfo Jose Z. Pepito Jr. urged the awardees to influence their neighboring barangays so that Zero Open Defecation can be continually promoted: “Ato ni siya tabangan na kung mahimo, sunod tuig mas ma dugangan pa ang awardees sa Zero Open Defecation. Sa atong mga barangays na naka award, hinaot unta na pagdawat ninyo sa inyong award, atoang ma impluwensiyan atong mga silingan na barangay para pud mag kadaghan ang maka implementar sa ZOD.”
