Nineteen Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), split into two batches, completed their 10-day training for CSC (Civil Service Commission) eligibility. Batch 1 consisted of 10 BNS who attended training sessions prescribed by the Municipal Nutrition Office (MNO) between August 2023 and January 2024, while Batch 2 took place between September 2023 and April 2024 and was composed of 9 BNS.
As per Presidential Decree No. 1569, “Strengthening the Barangay Nutrition Program by providing for a Barangay Nutrition Scholar in every barangay, providing funds therefor, and for other purposes,” each barangay is mandated to provide at least one BNS to cater to basic health and nutrition services at all levels, particularly in relation to malnutrition among children.
“The barangay nutrition scholar shall be a barangay-based volunteer worker responsible for delivering nutrition services and other related activities such as community health, backyard food production, environmental sanitation, culture, mental feeding, and family planning to the barangay.”, Presidential Decree No. 1569, signed on June 11, 1978.
The BNS attended two days of Refresher Course Training on Philippine Integrated Management on Acute Malnutrition and Nutrition in Emergencies, three days of Infant and Young Child Feeding and BNS Refresher Course, and two days of Nutrition Program Management, Maternal Nutrition Infant and Young Child Feeding, and Pabasa sa Nutrisyon and BNS Refresher Course.
To be eligible for CSC, BNS must have at least two years of continuous and satisfactory service in their respective barangays. They are not required to apply for eligibility; however, the MNO highly encourages them to. By virtue of Presidential Decree No. 1569, the CSC grants the BNSE first level eligibility to qualify BNSs. As long as the appointee satisfies the position's requirements for education, training, experience, and other factors, they are eligible to be appointed to clerical and other first-level positions.
