DISADVANTAGED FARMERS AFFECTED BY THE EL NIÑO RECEIVED CASH ASSISTANCE

El Niño-affected farmers receives assistance from the Office of the President

The Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) facilitated the release of cash assistance from the Office of the President to 185 marginalized farmers in the municipality of Manolo Fortich affected by the onslaught of the El Niño phenomenon. The distribution was conducted inside the municipal gymnasium, Barangay Tankulan, on June 11, 2024.

Farmers are advised to report to their respective Barangay Agriculture Technician (BAT) before planting to receive assistance from the government in specific circumstances, such as the El Niño phenomenon. Beneficiaries include those who reported to their BATs prior to planting and those who are not receiving any other government cash assistance, such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). They undergo a verification process during the cash release, facilitated by the MAO. Once verified, the 10,000-peso cash assistance is released to them by personnel from the Provincial Treasurer's Office (PTO).

“Ato silang e-aghat nga bisan tuod naay dawaton o wala, importante gyud nga mag-report ta because ang ato man gung report gina-consolidate nato sa office (MAO) unya ginapanghatag nato na sa ahensya sa atong gobyerno like sa province, sa region, kanang sa region muabot na sa national.” Municipal Agriculturist Gemma G. Cania stated. She underlined that to consolidate the scope of assistance needed and secure the funding and resources from higher government offices, farmers must report their activities/progress to their respective BATs.

Among the recipients was 49-year-old farmer Jonas Alecer of Barangay Lindaban, whose crops include vegetables and corn. “Nagpasalamat ko sa assistance sa Office of the President ug sa DA office sa Manolo Fortich, dako kaayong tabang gihatag sa amo nga makabarug og balik sa among pananom. Atong ting-init gyud wala gyud mi nahimo kay tanan gyud patay ang among mga tanom. Ang uban naka recover, pero dili gyud 100%. Ang among ani below 10% ra ug naa man gali, dako kaayo ang nawala.” Alecer stated while expressing his gratitude for the cash assistance, which he said would be instrumental in kick-starting his farming operations.

El Niño continues to pose a serious threat to Filipino farmers, especially the marginalized, underscoring the vital role that government assistance programs play in ensuring their livelihoods and food security during these trying times.
