What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a diverse group of neurodevelopmental disorders that usually first appear in children and are distinguished by significant difficulties with behavior, speech, and social interaction. Individuals diagnosed with ASD may endure lifelong mental, financial, and sometimes physical stress, as well as hardship for their family.
Research is still being conducted to better understand the complex nature of ASD, create focused interventions, and improve resources to support affected individuals and their families.
Prevalence of Autism in the Philippines
According to the Autism Society of the Philippines, the country has a prevalence of 1 in every 100 individuals. This translates to approximately 1.2 million Filipinos living with autism.
What is Causes Autism?
The actual causes of autism remain unclear. Researchers have identified rare genetic mutations and common genetic variations associated with autism, suggesting a genetic component. To better understand the interplay between genetic and environmental factors, some researchers are assessing exposure to harmful contaminants during pregnancy and increased the probability that this exposure would activate genetic mutations increasing the likelihood that the child will have autism. Evidence also shows that other childhood vaccines do not increase the risk of autism. Numerous studies have found that the additive aluminum and the preservative thiomersal, which are present in various inactivated vaccinations, do not raise the risk of autistic symptoms in children.
What Environmental Factors May Be Associated with Autism?
The understanding of environmental risk factors linked to autism has advanced significantly. The most compelling evidence suggests that the following things happen both before and during birth:
• Advanced parental age at the time of conception
• Prenatal exposure to air pollution or specific pesticides
• Maternal conditions such as obesity, diabetes, or immune system disorders
• Extreme prematurity or very low birth weight
• Birth complications that result in periods of oxygen deprivation to the baby’s brain
It is important to remember that autism is unlikely to be caused by these factors alone. Rather, when paired with genetic predispositions, they appear to raise the probability of autism.
Assessment and Care
The development, health, well-being, and quality of life of individuals with autism can be maximized by a wide range of interventions, starting in early childhood, and continuing throughout life. Early access to evidence-based psychosocial therapies can help autistic youngsters become more socially and communication-savvy. It is advised that normal maternal and child health care include monitoring of the development of the kid.
It is important that, once autism has been diagnosed, children, adolescents and adults with autism and their caregivers are offered relevant information, services, referrals, and practical support, in accordance with their individual and evolving needs and preferences.
